Digging Holes

Today we enjoy cooler weather after a warm spell. I will dig a hole for the arborvitae that we used as a Christmas Tree about four years ago. In mid winter I planted it out by the back porch, and since then it has grown and so has the porch! Now we need it out of the way so we can extend the deck.

So, though it is mid-summer, we will transplant this short tree to the border of the back woods where we need screening, and hope for the best.

Holes are like a puzzle about "less is more"-- the more you dig, the less that is in the hole and the more hole you have. The less you dig, the more that is still in the hole. And the more you have to dig! The more you sweat, the more hole you have! But if it's a hole you want, then less is more. Oh well...

In any case, I will soak the roots of the little tree to make its transition easier. It will do better by the border where it will get more sun and air. It will still be known as the Christmas Tree, in any case. It has a better prognosis than the cut ones we have recycled over the years. Putting a bit of bird food in it at Christmas will be a good touch.
